Portrait Shoots

Joe Holiday Mountain Biking Shoot

Mountain Biking is a sport I have never photographed before and so I knew this quick shoot with Joe was going to be a challenge but also a great chance to grab some experience. Joe is a friend of mine who is a talented rider and him and I have often spoken in school about arranging a shoot and getting some shots of him on the trails.

I was going in blind to this shoot, something which I like to try and avoid usually if possible as was this a bigger shoot I would've liked to scout the trails before to find the angles but actually the fact that this was so new to me actually may have been a good thing as it forced me to think creatively and adapt.

Overall the shoot was good fun, I found the hardest part is effectively isolating joe on his bike in the air and ensuring that the shrubbery surrounding was not too distracting. However, that said I'm quite happy with the results and I've defiantly learnt a lot should I do a shoot similar to this in the future.

Cecily Studio Photoshoot

After finally finishing my exams and starting my summer holidays and getting back to shooting, I decided to kick things off with a simple studio shoot with my friend Cecily Russel who I have shot with before.

I was not really sure what my goal was with this shoot, I wanted to improve my studio skills, ease myself back into shooting and try and get some new portraits for this month's photobooks. I set up a simple set up with the beauty dish, a bed sheet as a backdrop and also a small flash as a kicker.

Snow Shoot!

Ive alwyas wanted to do some type of portrait shoot in the snow so when the "Beast from the East" hit Bristol I knew I had to get some shots.

Ruby, who I have shot with quite a few times before was kinf enough to offre to model despite the freezing weather. We arranged it very wuickly and just wrorked locally around Redland to experiment with what kind of shtos I could get. Of course it was absolutly freezing but we both ( maninly Ruby) braved the cold and overall got some nice shots which I am happy with.

Domaille Physio Therapy - Corperate Headshots

This shoot was a very simple headshot and styled type shoot for Melissa and Colin Domaille who work together in Bristol helping clients in their homes and their clinic. My intention for this shoot as to capture a variety of high-quality headshots for their websites of the new members of the team and also them at work.

Considering the space limitations, my main focus was achieving a natural lighting set up with the strobe but also showing the portability and quality aspects of their work. Whilst they are currently working on building their new website, you can get in touch with Colin or Melissa or see more about them over on their website.http://www.domailleneurophysio.co.uk/about-colin- dom

Urban Portrait Shoot - Ruby DR

This was a fun quick shoot I did around some new locations in town with a friend of mine who I have shot with before last year. I hadn't really had much time to 100% plan and scout a route for the shoot but, I had a few ideas as to where to shoot which worked very well in the end.

- Model -

Overall the shoot went really well, it was fun short and I was glad to be able to get out and grab some new images while I could. The weather wasn't great unfortunately, mostly dark and grey but that almost helped with the look I was going for!

Urban Portrait Shoot - Bearritos Restaurant

So this was a shoot I have been dying to do for a while. After coming back from Spain in August, I felt like I hadn't been properly motivated to shoot. Moreover, my exams in November meant I was dying to push myself to get out and shoot.

- Location -

- Quick Tip -

Be sure to get permission when shooting in specific locations to ensure the shoot can run smoothly with no surprises. Also try to give yourself some time to scout the locations to have an idea of what you will shoot on the day.

The main location for the shoot was in the Bearritos Bus in the Bear Pit which I had visited a few weeks prior and managed to get permission from my old geography teacher of Simon green who runs the company. The lighting on the day of the shoot was amazing with soft clouds and some scattered sun. After spending some time shooting on the bus Cecily and I went out and around town and visited the Christmas markets to shoot there.

- Model -

Overall the shoot went really well it was a great feeling to be out shooting again and getting some more images for my portfolio. by getting out and shooting. below are the final images of the day. A huge thank you to Mr Green for allowing me and Cecily to shoot in the bus.

Fitness Blogger Cecily Russel - Lifestyle Portrait Shoot

Thursday 26th October -

CECFIT -

Cecily is a Year 13 student who is keen about fitness and has grown her following, website and brand around the theme of living a healthy lifestyle and staying fit. Whilst chatting to her on our shoot, we spoke about how she wants to develop in the future. She spoke about wanting to be able to have a large following to whom she can teach and help sustain a healthy lifestyle.

- Quick Tip -

Before a shoot always try get a good understanding of what your client wants and what there final vision is.This can give you a good chance to use your creative input to advise them on what you think would work along with any ideas they had in mind.

Cecily originally reached out to me via email and after learning about the style of images she was looking for we arranged a date to shoot. The main aim of the shoot was to create images that  Cecily could use on her website. Lifestyle type shots.

- The Shoot and Location -

Cecily and I decided that we were going to shoot around the Dockside of Bristol to try and get some urban and rustic look. A few days before the shoot I headed out early in the morning to find a train of locations that we could shoot at on the day of the shoot.

We decided to shoot early in the morning near sunrise time so that we could ideally avoid the midday sun and catch some of the morning golden hour but sadly the thick cloud took hid the sun from us throughout the shoot. We met at college green at 8:30 and shot until 12.

Will has such an incredidble eye for photorgaphy. I enjoyed working with him he was full of ideas and excitment for my project - Not only is his photographic eye incredible, but as a person, he is so passionate and that really transfers into his images”
— Cecily Russell

- Quick Tip -

Scouting locations for me is a must before every shoot, not only does it give the shoot a more natural shoot, it allows me as a phtoographer to imagine and prepare the poses and shots I will get at each locations.

Working with Cecily was great, the shoot was smooth and we did our best to avoid the cold!  Her botfreind Olly came and helped out and worked as our assistant, holding coats, bags and providing the laughs throughout.

Work Experience Shoot - Linda Thomas Eco Design

I first met Linda in late 2016 where her and i spoke  at a stall I had set up to show my work and give out business cards at my schools open evening. Linda spoke to me about what she does and how she works with photographers all the time. Not only did her work sound fascinating but she also offered me the chance to assist on a shoot they had planned later on in the year!

- The Shoot -

26th April 2017

After a short drive in the car, we arrived at our location which was a stunning pebbled beach which was shadowed by a cliff side. Whilst the models were getting their makeup and dresses done, Katie and I went around the cliffside to scout for shots around the beach and more importantly were looking for shade as we were shooting at midday and so Katie was contending with the harsh sunlight.

At the beach, I was mainly helping Katie with the light as I diffused and reflected and helped the models stay warm and balance on the pebbles. It wasn't until the second location where Katie found some beautiful forests which complemented the dresses perfectly that I started shooting some images. The light here was much better with lots of shade and the occasional light spill.

The shoots intentions were to "Show how easy it is for a wedding to be sustainable. Putting love back at the centre and not abusing other people or the planet in the process. Weddings can produce a lot of rubbish, and upcycling is one way of counteracting that. The dresses were all made from upcycled silk and stitched together with organic cotton"

Another great thing is that in this shoot we diddnt we used models a wide range of diverse models. Tessa not only modelled immensely well on the shoot but is now on tour with "The Way I Look"  a production which highlights the experience of living with a facial difference.

- Final Images -

Being able to work with so many creative minded and inspirational people on a shoot was truly an honour. It was my first shoot where I had worked with a full team all aiming to create beautiful images and I learnt so much about all the small things, hiccups and work that goes into making a shooting flow smoothly. Overall the shoot went amazingly and I was keen to get home and edit my images and see Katie's images which were showcased in VOW Autumn magazine. Below is a gallery with some of the best images from the day that I took.

I owe a huge thank you to the team and especially Linda! I look forward to more shoots like this in the future.

Spain Summer 2017

For the majority of this summer, I was in Spain, Valladolid spending time with cousins, family and friends. Whilst I was there I also shot a ton of images from shoots, personal projects and videos.

- Quick Tip -

Push yourself to get out and shoo , if you have the time not every shoot you do has to be paid take time to do simple shoots to practise ideas and looks.

This summer I noticed that I whilst I try to stay as open as possible to shoot all types of things, I mainly drifted towards shooting portraits and the majority of my ideas for images focused around a portrait idea or look. I did a ton of shots when I was there and also branched out into working with people who were not relatives in Spain and that way I could adapt to working and shooting in Spanish.

Below I am going to leave a gallery of some of the best images I shot this summer! Be sure to leave a comment letting me know what you think of the images

Tom Rendal - PT Troop Personal Training Bristol

- Who are PT Troop? -

PT Troop is a group of personal trainers who offer a variety of activities from indoor gym training and weight loss to outdoor circuits and group activities. Having personally been trained by PT troop founder Tom Rendall in the past, I was delighted and eager to help him capture the hardworking and positive atmosphere they create.

- The Shoots -

- Quick tip -

I tried to shoot many of the exercise images wide to make the images look more dramatic. You can do this when shooting to try and make people or objects look larger.

On the first day of the shoot, I arrived early morning on to begin shooting some of the first sessions of the day in the gym. We chose a day where we could have the biggest variety of types of sessions possible. I wanted to try and capture the trainers interacting and the hardworking yet positive atmosphere of the day. The lighting in the gym was varied and harsh throughout and subsequently, I ended up shooting with reflected flash for many of the shots. The day after the shoot, I got up early morning again to shoot the outdoor group sessions on the downs.

Overall, the shoots went very well and I am happy with the given lighting and space.

Urban Portrait Shoot - Lucy and Issy

We both really enjoyed the shoot with Will. He made everything feel so relaxed and comfortable despite our nerves beforehand. Will is extremely easy to work with and produced brilliant pictures.

This was a shoot I arranged as I wanted to get out and get some new images and try some new techniques and overall, I ended up getting some of my favorite portraits to date! I had gone out before the shoot and had planned a series of locations around Bristol harbor side. I asked two freinds of mine if they would help out and model for me.

- The Models -

- Quick Tip -

Using Prisms or prism paper and holding it up to the lens can help give unique colors and effects to your images.

- The Final Images -

Overall, I am really really happy with the images from the shoots as I tired few techniques and tried to focus on trying new and different poses and used small sheets of prism paper to create interesting techniques.

Outdoor Urban Portrait Shoot

The shoot was a surprise for me by my friends; at first, I was nervous, but I became comfortable very quickly and got into it, which was mainly due to how friendly and welcoming Will was. We went to places that I never knew about, which as coll becuase I got to know the city more whilst doing it. The pictures turned out amazing and will is such a talented photorgapher!
— Hettie - Model

This shoot was one that as arranged to be a surprise portrait shoot for a groups of girls friend as a birthday present. We arranged to meet by the harbour side and begin the shoot there. Our locations were based around the centre of Bristol and I went out before the shoot to prepare and pre plan some of the looks for the images. On the day the weather was a bit sunny which was tough to work with however we managed to find locations that took us out of the sun.The surprise went really well and overall the model was pleased with photos.

- Quick Tip

Always bring a reflector or diffuser with you on a shoot as shooting in direct sunlight is tough to work with and creates harsh highlights on the models face. have your assistant shadow the models face or if you do not have a diffuser, shoot int eh shadows!

Blue Bell Woods Portrait Shoot

This was a paid shoot I did over half term and i decided to use the woods as our location as the blue bells were in perfect season. I chose prior woods as our shooting location and arrived two hours before the shoot to scout locations for the shoot.

I really enjoyed having my photos taken by Will. He made me feel at ease straight away with his warm and friendly approach. He made me laugh a lot and was very professional. My Mum and I are both really pleased with the results! Thank you Will. Best of luck in your path, you are very talented, polite and pleasant to work with and we enjoyed meeting you.

Outdoor Street Portrait Photoshoot

This was a shoot I did with a group of friends as I wanted to get out and find locations and shoot to get some new images whilst I had time. I had gone out a few weeks before to scout locations for the shoot but also used new places that we thought looked interesting whilst walking about.

- The Models -

We shot around Bristol City centre near Park Street. It was an overcast day with a bit of sun which provided us with perfect light meaning the only light modifier I had to use was a reflector to add a little extra boost in the images.

The Groomsmiths Barbers Photoshoot

I really enjoyed having will around, the photoshoot was conducted in a professional manner and everything ran smoothly from, start to finish. I can highly recommend Will to anyone who is thinking of capturing the image and identity of their business. I hope to work with him again in the near future
— Valon ( Barber )

This was a shoot that neither I or the customer had planned nor arranged it was all simply down to being lucky to meet each other at the right place and the right time.

I was down in London from Friday the 19th to the 21st with my family just spending some time together and we went down to Borough Market to spend the afternoon. I wanted to try and take some photos for the "Passing Time" photo project. I was out shooting setting up and framing my shot when I met Valon Sadiku (Barber).

Valon has been a Barber for 18 years and has just opened his a new barber shop in an alleyway off the market. He stopped me we talked for a while I gave him my card and said I'd be more than happy to help him out in getting some images of him. his colleagues and the new shop.

- Quick Tip -

When shooting photos like this for clients, try taking a series of images that show some sort of story. I always like to include the People, Wide, Tights and Detail Shots. That way I have series of images that all bind to tell a story.

My goal on this shoot was to see what the Valon wanted his images to look like and also tell some sort of photo story that showed the shop in the best light possible

Below are some of the best images from the shoot.

Outdoor Portrait Shoot Bristol Harbour - Anya Wheatley

On this shoot, I wanted to get some new portraits and just get out and shoot and stay creative. I went to a few locations around the centre of Bristol and near the harbour.

- The Model -

- Quick Tip -

When working in working in mixed lighting condition on a shoot, meter and expose your shots for the highlights and bring back the shadows in post instead. However don't do this to much when shooting at a higher ISO's as you can introduce a lot of noise in the shadows.

I wanted the shots to have a natural look and feel and I tried to use some of the natural warm light thatwas coming off teh sun as it set towards the end of the shoot.

Christmas Holidays -

Over the Christmas holidays, I have spent the time over in Spain with family and friends. I spent a lot of the time taking photos of family dinners and events which I won't share on here, however, I also shot a few portraits and have begun working on some ideas for a new project.

The project is one that I am not sure how it will grow but I kust watend to try new techniques and skills around portraiture which I think look really nice! What do you think?

Urban shoot with Scarlett Last

As I will be away for Christmas and won't be able to shoot and edit as often, I thought it would be a good idea to get in a shoot and work with the new lens before travelling!

- Quick Tip -

Check the weather before the shoot! Overcast days usually work best on outdoor shoots as the light is nice and soft so no harsh shadows. And, with a reflector, the light is easy to work with.

I wanted to try more of an urban type shoot so I went out the day before and cycled to find different locations that we could shoot at. All were relatively close to each other. We started the shoot at 9:30am as I was travelling on the same day as the shoot meaning I would not have much time to shoot and then edit.

- Model and Assistant -

Overall it was a very fun and quick shoot that allowed me to try different techniques and establish my style more and more!

Outdoor Portrait Shoot - Anya and Poppy

I enjoyed the shoot not only because the images turned out really well but because will was easy to work with and made it an enjoyable eperience overall!
— Anya Wheatley

I recently was hired to do a shoot for some friends of mine and we decided on an indoor type shoot with one or two shots outside. My initial idea was to do some shots inside in a kitchen and then move out to a cafe and outdoors where we would shoot some different styled shots.

This was also my first shoot with my new Sigma 50-100 F1.8 lens so it was interesting to challenge myself and see  how it performed in a real world situation!

- The Models -

- Quick tip -

When shooting with models, make sure you are relaxed, fun and help them with posing. By being confident behind the camera your models will feel more comfortable resulting in better images!

It was a very dark and rainy day on the shoot meaning I had to push the camera to high ISO's, low apertures and slightly slower shutter speeds than usual. However, overall, the shoot was very fun and the images turned out great Anya and poppy were a pleasure to work with .
